People!!!! Where is the Love?

by River Urke & Natasha Head~

The Black Eyed Peas began as an alternative hip hop group back in 1995 with rappers will.I.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo. Fergie joined them in 2001. We know them today as the funky American pop group/hip hop group that topped the charts in 2003 with their first worldwide hit Where is the Love from their third album,  Elephunk. Where is the Love was written post 9/11 to express their outrage to various worldwide problems from terrorism to war to intolerance to greed to sexual assault to racism. The song is considered an anthem for anti-war pacifists addressing what is wrong with the world today.

Where is the Love hit the top ten charts in thirteen countries and the album has sold over 56 million copies worldwide. In 2004, the Black Eyed Peas performed the political song at the 46th Annual GrammyAwards along with being nominated for Album of the Year and Best Rap/Song Collaboration for Where is the Love  In 2011, the group performed during the halftime show of Super Bowl XLV. They used the opportunity with their song Where is the Love to pass a message to President Obama on current affairs.  will,I.am changed some of the lyrics  within the song to “In America we need to get things straight/Obama let’s get these kids educated/Create jobs so the country stays stimulated/This is dedicated to all the innovators.”

We feature the Black Eyed Peas and their song Where is the Love this week to point out major problems our world faces that so many people ignore exists around them. We have added some statistics to some of the major problems pointed out within the song. The video is placed at the end for you to view the bands interpretation of their song. We would like to ask each and everyone of you to think about if you ignore other people’s pain and suffering and if so why?

What’s wrong with the world, mama?
people livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas

  • 1 out of 3 women worldwide has experienced rape or sexual assault.
  • In some countries, up to one-third of adolescent girls report forced sexual initiation
  • A report of seven different countries found that more than 60% of sexual assault victims know their attackers.
  •  In South Africa, a sex crime happens every twenty seconds.
  • Hundreds of thousands of women and girls throughout the world are forcibly trafficked and prostituted each year.

But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to disxccriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you’re bound to get irate, yeah
Madness is what you demonstrate
And that’s exactly how anger works and operates

  • According to CBC News “A hate crime is one in which hate is the motive and can involve intimidation, harassment, physical force or threat of physical force against a person, group or property”
  • Under section 318 of the Criminal Code of Canada, it is a criminal act to “advocate genocide”

~

 People killin’, people dyin’
Children hurt and you hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

  • According to Stats Can, hate crime rates are the highest amongst our youth
  • Race crimes are the most common hate crimes committed around the world

So I could ask myself really what is goin’ wrong
In this world that we livin’ in people keep on givin’ in
Makin’ wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin’ each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin’ on but the reason’s undercover
The truth is kept secret, it’s swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love

  • According to Stats Can, hate crimes increased by 35% between the 2007-2008
  • In 2009, the number grew to 42%

Most of us only care about money makin’
Selfishness got us followin’ our wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema

  • By continually pushing the message we have the right to gratification NOW, consumerism at its most expansive encouraged a demand for fulfillment that could not so easily be contained by products – Ellen Willis
  • It is the logic of consumerism that undermines the values of loyalty and permanence and promotes a different set of values that is destructive of family life – Christopher Lasch

Yo’, whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead of spreading love we’re spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity

~
That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feelin’ under
That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feelin’ down
There’s no wonder why sometimes I’m feelin’ under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found
Now ask yourself

~

One world, one world – One world, one world
And something’s wrong wit it  One world, one world

(That’s all we got)

Where is the Love?

“The music video for “Where Is the Love?” was shot in East Los Angeles and features the Black Eyed Peas and various other people, including various young children, asking the world where the love really is. In the video, will.i.am and Taboo act as a soul music road duo who try to use music to tell people what is wrong with the world, Fergie appears as a peacemaker who places stickers with question marks on them all over the place to ask people where the love is in the world, and apl.de.ap is a criminal who is arrested for using criminal offences to tell people the truth.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_Is_the_Love%3F)
