Opinion~ Future Resource: Children

by Kim  ~

In my opinion, children are our greatest resource for our future. Two things come to my mind when you mention children and reading and they are knowledge and pleasure.  Both are paramount, equally important, though I would say pleasure is supreme.

The knowledge children obtain from reading include greater vocabulary, processing of material in the brain, increasing skills for other subjects in school. Alas, we now have the computer for knowledge, speed and with that information at our fingertips what is at the end of that trail? The answer is more reading and a discernment of facts or not. The future interpreting those facts: children.

Pleasure though, in my opinion, is what keeps children reading and reading happily. They know if they like it or not. This interest is what will keep them moving and exploring. Different genres make it fun and kids like fun. Period. Online venues, social networks like Facebook and Twitter, apps, games, newsprint and magazines further grab the child according to interest.

Reading, a pleasant escape from this busy world, can be a form of me time, self- absorption if you will as kids are juggled from home to school, daycare, activities and to home.

Personal note: My son has read the Hunger Games, Alex Rider and The Lightening Thief Series! Myself, a few moons ago, read National Velvet, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Treasure Island, Gulliver’s Travels, Wuthering Heights and Gone with the Wind.

  1. Bonjour,

  2. Kim, first of all welcome in the River’s team – i’m glad you joined us :).
and your opinion is such an emotional one! i am a mother myself, and i couldn’t agree with you more on this topic. though, sadly enough, i couldn’t help noticing that so many children don’t read anymore simply because of filling their time with activities like watching TV or playing on the computer or things like that…:(

We would love to hear your thoughts :)
